High Cross / National Museum Ireland

We were approached by the National Museum of Ireland to look at an exhibition of Irish High Crosses, consisting of six monumental casts of original high crosses. The collection having just returned from Japan required displaying in the riding school at Collins barracks, Dublin.

HSD were asked to position the artefacts in the space in order to maximise there impact. This was achieved by the design and installation of an introductory space, where on arrival visitors entered a low dark space, deliberately designed to feel claustrophobic and oppressive, as visitors moved further into the space it became narrower and more confined. From here visitors got there first glimpse of the crosses. Leaving the introductory space the ceiling rises to over nine meters. The crosses dominated the space and were further enhanced by a dramatic lighting scheme implemented by Sutton Vane associates.
